Memphis airport approves spending nearly $1 million for snow brooms

It’s triple-digits hot outside, so naturally Memphis International Airport is stocking up on snow brooms.

The Airport Authority voted Thursday to shell out $922,095 on snow sweepers in hopes of averting a catastrophic closing of its runways.

Officials said the always-open airport came perilously close to shutting down during one of last winter’s snowstorms.

John Greaud, vice president of operations, said three out of four runways were closed because maintenance crews didn’t have enough snow-clearing equipment.

“Last year, we were on the bubble,” Greaud said. “We were very close to actually having to shut down.”

Airport operators like to brag that the facility is always open. The FAA may ground airplanes, as it did on Sept. 11, 2001, or airlines may cancel flights in or out of the airport, as they did during last winter’s snows, but the airport doesn’t close.

Greaud said the new brooms should make it possible to keep all runways clear of snow in an extreme weather event.

Just a day after announcing a new name for the airline — SureJet — the carrier put a “ground stop” on the idea. The decision came after a barrage of negative comments. On some airline message boards, for example, postings expressed a combination of surprise, disbelief and discontent regarding the change, along with satirical takes on the name.

Atlanta-based Atlantic Southeast announced the “SureJet” moniker Wednesday, saying it would take effect once its merger with ExpressJet Airlines is complete. Atlantic Southeast, a Delta Connection regional carrier, is a subsidiary of SkyWest Inc. and acquired ExpressJet last November.

But on Thursday, Atlantic Southeast spokeswoman Kate Modolo confirmed that the SureJet name is being parked for now.  “We’ve heard concerns our employees have voiced about the SureJet name,” she said. “We’re valuing our employees’ feedback and we want to do what’s right.”

Borders Books and Music at Poplar and Kirby will not see another Christmas season, but in 2005, before the book industry began a period of wrenching change, long lines of holiday shoppers were the norm for the store.

It appears the final chapter has been written for Borders Books and Music, culminating in a sad ending for book lovers and business investors alike.

Executives with Borders Group Inc. have confirmed that the nation’s second-largest bookseller will begin shuttering stores this week after it failed to find a suitable buyer willing to rescue the chain’s remaining 399 stores. Thepany had hoped to secure a buyer through an auction, but no bids emerged and corporate leaders announced plans to shut down.

Liquidation will begin immediately; it is unclear how long the store at 6685 Poplar in Germantown will remain open.

“We expect that the liquidation sales will start to happen in some stores nationwide as early as this Friday, though I don’t know if they’re happening in Memphis,”pany spokeswoman Mary Davis said Tuesday. Read Full Article…

Andrew Wallace and Jeffrey DeRamus initially set out looking to purchase a condo, but are thrilled with their decision to buy a single-family home in Cordova.

Short-term pain for long-term gain. That was the strategy Andrew Wallace and Jeffrey DeRamus took when it came to their first home purchase.

“We started planning to search for a house before we chose our apartment,” Wallace said. “We chose one (apartment) that probably was not in a very good area, but it was cheap — it was half what we would have spent elsewhere. So we took that other half and set it aside every month.”

“The years there gave us the opportunity to make a better investment down the road,” DeRamus added.

By the time they started searching for a home, Wallace and DeRamus were prepared from a financial standpoint.
